Watching your child reach their first birthday is an exciting milestone. They’re becoming more curious about the world around them, discovering new skills almost every day and developing their own unique personality. It can also be the time when many parents begin thinking about nursery.
Whether you’re returning to work, looking to introduce your child to new experiences or simply wondering if now is the right time, it’s completely natural to ask yourself one important question: Is my child ready for nursery at one?
The answer is different for every family because every child develops at their own pace. Rather than focusing on age alone, it’s much more helpful to think about the environment your child will be joining and whether it can provide the care, reassurance and individual support they need.
At Apple Trees Childcare, we understand that choosing a nursery is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a parent. That’s why we’ve created a warm, family-focused environment where children are encouraged to settle, explore, learn and grow at a pace that’s right for them.
There isn’t a ‘perfect’ age to start nursery
It’s easy to compare your child to others, especially during the toddler years. One child may already be walking confidently, while another is happiest crawling. Some enjoy meeting new people straight away, while others need a little more time before they feel comfortable.
These differences are completely normal.
Children don’t need to reach a particular milestone before they’re ready for nursery. Instead, they benefit from an environment where practitioners take the time to understand them as individuals.
At Apple Trees, children always come first. We know that a successful nursery experience begins with getting to know each child, their personality and the routines that help them feel safe and secure.
Building confidence through familiar routines
Starting nursery is a new experience for both children and parents, so maintaining a sense of familiarity can make a real difference.
In our Caterpillar Room, practitioners work closely with parents to learn about each child’s home routine. Sleep times, meal times and comforting routines are all discussed so that we can provide as much consistency as possible during those important first weeks.
This partnership helps children feel more settled while giving parents confidence that their child’s individual needs are understood and respected.
There is no expectation for children to adapt overnight. Instead, we recognise that every family is different, and every child settles in their own way.
Individual attention matters
One-year-olds learn through close relationships with the adults around them.
A reassuring smile, a familiar voice or someone taking the time to sit alongside them while they explore can make all the difference to how secure they feel in a new environment.
That’s why Apple Trees maintains higher staff ratios than recommended.
This allows our practitioners to spend more quality time with each child, responding to their needs, encouraging their curiosity and providing the individual attention that helps them build confidence.
Our Caterpillar Room is also limited to just six children, creating a calm and nurturing environment where our youngest children can begin their nursery journey surrounded by familiar faces and caring relationships.
Learning begins with curiosity
Children don’t need structured lessons to learn.
At one year old, learning happens through everyday experiences.
It might be exploring different textures, listening to music, watching the seasons change outdoors or discovering what happens when water splashes from one container to another.
Every experience helps children develop their understanding of the world.
At Apple Trees, children enjoy bright, welcoming indoor spaces alongside dedicated outdoor environments where they can experience fresh air, nature and sensory exploration every day.
Our separate baby and toddler garden has been designed with younger children in mind, giving them the opportunity to explore safely while developing their confidence outdoors.
As children grow, they continue to enjoy our wider outdoor spaces, including our outdoor classroom, where every season brings new opportunities for discovery.
More than just outdoor play
Spending time outdoors isn’t simply about burning off energy.
It gives children opportunities to notice, investigate and experience the natural world in ways that simply aren’t possible indoors.
Apple Trees is fortunate to have access to a village allotment where children grow fruit and vegetables before seeing them used in the healthy, home-cooked meals prepared by our nursery cook.
Although our youngest children are only beginning their learning journey, they become part of a nursery community that values healthy lifestyles, curiosity and hands-on experiences from an early age.
These meaningful experiences help children develop an appreciation for nature while creating exciting opportunities to learn through real-life experiences.
A nursery that works in partnership with parents
Choosing a nursery isn’t just about finding somewhere your child will enjoy.
It’s also about finding a team you feel comfortable talking to, asking questions and sharing those important milestones with.
Strong partnerships with parents are an important part of life at Apple Trees.
We encourage families to share information about their child’s routines, interests and development so we can provide the best possible care throughout the day.
Parents also have access to their own Tapestry account, where they can see their child’s care diary, including meals, sleep, toileting information, activities and observations from nursery.
Being able to see these everyday moments helps parents remain connected to their child’s nursery experience while opening the door to conversations at home about everything they’ve enjoyed throughout the day.
Looking beyond the toys and resources
When visiting a nursery, it’s easy to be drawn to colourful resources and exciting activities.
While these certainly have their place, it’s often the atmosphere that tells you far more.
Do the practitioners greet children warmly?
Do the children appear relaxed and happy?
Does the environment feel calm, welcoming and caring?
Apple Trees operates from a large converted house in the heart of Flamstead, creating a homely environment that reflects our family-focused approach.
Combined with caring practitioners, thoughtfully designed learning spaces and opportunities to enjoy both indoor and outdoor experiences, it’s a place where children are supported to develop confidence from the moment they walk through the door.
So, is your child ready?
Rather than asking whether your child is ready for nursery, it can sometimes be more helpful to ask whether you’ve found the right nursery for your child.
A nursery where they’re encouraged to settle at their own pace.
A nursery where practitioners take the time to understand their individual routines and personality.
A nursery where they can explore, make new discoveries and build confidence every day within a caring, supportive environment.
If you’re considering nursery for your one or two-year-old this September, we’d love to welcome you to Apple Trees Childcare.
